SIX INDIVIDUAL 50-MINUTE COACHING SESSIONS WITH SOPHIE
Coaching helps you bring what you learn into your real family life.
KNOWING IS ONE THING. DOING IS ANOTHER.
We all know we should eat well, exercise more and get enough sleep. Knowing it doesn't necessarily make it easy to do.
Parenting is no different. Understanding an idea is one thing. Remembering it in the middle of a difficult moment, working out what it means in this particular situation and actually putting it into practice can take a bit of support.
WHAT DOES COACHING GIVE YOU THAT THE COURSE DOESN'T?
1. UNDERSTAND THE CONTEXT
Parents Lab brings together well-researched ideas, skills and tools from across the field. Their application is nuanced, and there’s rarely one simple answer.
Your child's needs, your family dynamics and the situation you're in are uniquely yours. Context matters enormously.
Coaching gives you a chance to explore what these ideas could look like in your own family.
2. ASK QUESTIONS AND CHECK YOUR APPROACH
Ask questions and check your understanding. Having someone to explore these concepts with can help you feel more confident in your thinking and your approach.
3. TURN LEARNING INTO ACTION
People learning a sport often work with a coach. Knowing how something works is one thing; practising it, getting feedback and building confidence in doing it is another.
Parenting is no different. You may understand an idea, but turning it into something you can actually do can take practice and support.
4. PRACTISE A PROCESS FOR CHANGE
Coaching gives you an opportunity to practise systems thinking: stepping back, looking at the bigger picture, breaking things down and identifying small, simple steps towards the change you would like to see.
5. MODEL A WAY OF PROBLEM SOLVING FOR YOUR CHILD
As you become more practised, confident and calm in this way of thinking, you are modelling it for your child too.
Learning how to find a way forward and take manageable steps towards their goals is an important part of growing independence.
6. EXPERIENCE COACHING FOR YOURSELF
Parents Lab includes skills and techniques drawn from coaching and change management.
Experiencing coaching yourself can show you how useful this approach can be in parenting, communication, relationships, work and other areas of life.
THE AGENDA IS YOURS
Coaching sessions often start with opening questions for you.
“What is the change you would like to see?”
“How can I support you today?”
“I just want mornings to be calmer.”
“Why do my kids always start fighting in the car?”
“How can I get my partner to be on the same page as me?”
“He is so distracted or so focused that either way there is a loss of connection.”
“There is so much stress around screen time.”
“I don't know how to get homework done without everyone ending up in tears.”
“I feel like we're stuck in the same argument over and over again.”
“I know what I'm supposed to do, but I can't seem to do it when things kick off.”.
